Pumpkin Carving
We had such a fun day weighing, measuring, and carving our pumpkins! The kids had a blast and were engaged in the activities, especially the carving! A HUGE thank you to the volunteers - we could not have done it without you! Here are some pictures of the pumpkin carving. I enjoyed all of your creations and hope you had fun, too! More pictures will follow very soon.
The students always look forward to engaging in Learning Centers. The activities in each center change after each group has visited all of the centers. Our first rotation included creating patterns, Literacy games on the laptop, colour by numbers, reading to a partner, and creating words using stickers and our word wall. They have impressed me by their ability to stay on task and help others. Way to go Grade One! :)
Making Observations
Look at these little scientists! We took our clipboards outside to use all five of our senses to observe materials outside. Notice one student listening to a tree, one examining leaves and another quietly watching a bird. We had tons of fun taking our learning outside!
Buffalo Stations
The students participated in five centers all focused around the importance of the buffalo to First Nations and Metis culture. The students made connections to write about in our journals, painted pictures on buffalo "hide" and viewed real artifacts. Lots of fun was had by all!:)

Science Projects: Animal Expert Groups
The students chose animals in which they would like to study then were placed into small groups. Together, they gathered data and wrote new facts on sticky notes. Once they completed their research they wrote information on chart paper, index cards, and on a graphic organizer. They then created a poster to help present their findings to the class. They each chose a few facts to share and wrote them on index cards. I am very proud of all of their hard work and even learned a few new facts from these young scientists. Fantastic work Grade 1!!:)
St. Patrick's Day!
The students had a blast graphing lucky charms! Math is so much more fun when you get to eat your work;). The students were so excited to find out that two leprechauns, Lily and Levi, visited our classroom. They hid gold coins all around our classroom for us to find. We're still finding some in tricky hiding places! We wrote thank you cards, which I will be mailing away to our little friends!:) I hope to see them again next year!!
THANK YOU!!
A huge thank you to everyone who has a Scholastic Book order!! Because of you we now have a brand new addition to our classroom! We receive a percentage of points from each order each month that we order from Scholastic. I have been saving since the beginning of the school year and have finally accumulated enough points to purchase this white board/chart paper organizer, which I love! We have been using it everyday and it saves us from using so much chart paper and hurting our planet. I could not have purchased this item without your support so THANK YOU!! I have a few other classroom resources that I am saving up for so I hope that you will continue to support the development of our classroom.:)
Goodbye Mursel:(
Best of luck to Mursel and his family as they embark on a new adventure in a new city! We miss you already and hope that you are settling into your new home. Please keep in touch:).

Holiday Sock Hop Photos
The last week of school before the holidays was very busy and filled with so many fun activities! I have included some photos from our primary sock hop. We spent the morning dancing with our friends and even tried some limbo! Check out the few photos that I was able to take while enjoying the time with the kids.:)
Letter Factory Actions Video
The students have learned the letters of the alphabet with the assistance of The Letter Factory by Leap Frog. The students now know all of the actions and would like to share them with you! I encourage all students to teach the actions to their parents. You can even make it a game - say a letter of the alphabet and have them show you the action. See how many letters you can get in a row or see how quickly you can complete the whole alphabet! Have fun and enjoy the video!:)

Black Book of Colours Art
During our study of the five senses, we read the book "The Black Book of Colours" by Menena Cottin. (check out link for more info). The book's images are all black but have been raised so that the reader can "feel" the image. The book is written in both English language and braille and includes a full braille alphabet at the end of the book. The book encourages students to imagine life without sight and the challenges this would bring. To extend our learning around this book, we created art that was inspired by the book. Using black construction paper and white glue, we created pictures that we could touch and feel. The students really enjoyed this activity and loved the idea that they could "feel" a picture. Take a look at the photos below!
Books & Bagels
To celebrate Education Week, our school hosted a "Books and Bagels" event. Parents were invited to the school to spend the morning reading with their child(ren). I was so happy to see so many families attend and heard a lot of positive feedback! We understand if you weren't able to attend and made sure that each child had someone to read with. The other students were happy to invite their friends to read with them. I hope everyone enjoyed their time at the event as much as I did!:) Check out the photos below!
Pumpkin Celebration
Both grade 1 classrooms participated in a Pumpkin Celebration Day on October 31, and wow was it fun!! The students engaged in a variety of centers to explore their group's pumpkin. They measured the height, weight, circumference, discovered if it would sink or float, and more! After our exploration, we carved our pumpkins and counted the seeds. We then drew names from a hat to choose one lucky member from each group to take home the pumpkin.
In the afternoon we ate our delicious pumpkin seeds and watched some pumpkin films. After recess we shared our treats with the class and read some pumpkin stories. Thank you so much to all that brought treats to share! Another huge thank you to the volunteers Sheena, Gloria, Erin, and Mrs Johnson!
We were lucky enough to have a very special photographer, MacNeill's own, Larry Burkowsky! He was kind enough to offer his talent and take some beautiful photos to share with you! I will be adding some more later. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we had taking them!!:)

Ten Frames
In Math we have been working on subitizing and grouping numbers. One of the ways that we are doing this is by using ten frames. The students have been really enjoying playing something we like to call the "Ten Frame Game". Students work together in pairs and are given one ten frame and some counters. One student hides his/her eyes while the other places a certain amount of counters on the ten frame. The other student can then look at the Ten Frame and identify "as quick as lighting" the amount that they see. This a great way to practise at home as well. Click here to find a printable Ten Frame. I will also add an interactive Ten Frame game under Learning Links.
Check out some photos that we took while playing our game!

Pumpkin Hollow
The students, volunteers, and I had a blast at Pumpkin Hollow last week. We got lost in a corn maze, road a Cow Train, fed some animals, and jumped on a giant pillow! We also explored a room filled with different types of pumpkins! I will be adding photos that I took soon. In the meantime, please check out this great slideshow that Addison's mom, Sheena, put together. A BIG thank you to Sheena for sharing this with us. Another GIANT thank you to all of the volunteers who joined us on our trip. Your help was essential in helping the field trip run smoothly - I really could not have done it without you!!
Enjoy the slideshow!:)

Taste Test - Exploring our Sense of Taste
We have been engaging in a variety of activities to develop our understanding of our senses. Last week the students participated in a "Taste Test" in which they were to identify if a food tasted "sweet, salty, sour, or bitter". The students had a lot of fun trying the foods and describing the way it tasted. Many were also surprised to find out that they dislike the taste of pure chocolate. Ask your child to describe what they thought it would taste like and how it actually tasted.
